Meet your representatives

Hamish Gordon Hopkinson

My name is Hamish Hopkinson and I am standing for the Board of Trustees for Freemans Bay School.

My wife Jo and I have lived in Freemans Bay for 15 years. Our son Jack is in Whanau Puna (Year 3) and our daughter Emma will be starting school next February.

Over the past 18 months I have been coordinating the Parent Group at School. Especially in the last 8 months a great team of parents have formed to organise the disco, the school fair, Fabulous Fridays and plan future events. I have done this to meet, engage and support other parents but to also help build the parent community inside the school.

The importance of education and supporting your local school is something I really value. We have a great school here – but let’s do our best to make it better. My focus as a parent representative on the Board would be: 1. Student Achievement 2. Continuing to develop the parent community of the school 3. Creating an effective Board that communicates more 4. Supporting the Principal and staff 5. Preparing for the future

My background is in being involved with education, sporting and environmentally focused organisations. I understand the challenges of balancing budgets, employing staff, reporting to boards, adapting, innovating and communicating to a wide range of stakeholders.

In addition, I have been involved with various boards for 20 years – either by being on them or reporting to them. Boards can be challenging and fun but above all require a good team of people to make them a success. I believe I have the time, listening skills, ability and enthusiasm to contribute.

Like all parents at this school, I want our children to thrive. I want to use my skills, experience and energy to support the staff, students and parents of this school to provide the best school, a great education and opportunities for our children to grow into happy, caring and smart teenagers.

It would be an honour and a privilege to represent you on the Board. Your vote would be appreciated.

David George Robert King

Candidate profile: David King Nominated by: Anthony Hawke

Kia ora, Ni hao, Namaste, or Hello in the many other native tongues we are lucky enough to have in the Whānau. My name is David King and I am standing for the Freemans Bay School Board. I am married to Gabby King and the father of Lily (age 6, in Emma’s class in Whānau Rau) and Angus (age 3). We have lived in Freemans Bay since 2010, having emigrated from the UK in 2007. We are very lucky that our children can attend such a welcoming, diverse and forward thinking school, and I would be honoured to have the opportunity to contribute to its continued success.

My approach to being a trustee will be to make sure that the voice of the entire school community is considered and reflected at FBS, as well as to support the principal in making key decisions. I have a strong belief in the importance of great education, and am passionate about contributing to achieving this. My specific skills that would benefit the school are in finance, strategy and governance.

My relevant experience for being a trustee includes both my professional role as an accountant at KPMG and my voluntary experience with Springboard Trust.

I am a Partner in the Deal Advisory team at KPMG (a global accounting and professional services firm) where I work with people and companies going through major changes. This includes significant governance aspects such as strategy, communication and accountability.

I also volunteer with Springboard Trust, which I have been involved with for the last four years. In this role I coach primary school principals over a year in developing a long-term strategic plan for their school. This has given me insight into the many challenges and opportunities facing primary schools. I have also developed an understanding of leadership and strategy in primary education.

My relevant background and experience also includes: • Educated at state-funded, open entry schools in the UK. • 1st Class degree from Newcastle University, Post Grad certificate in Law from Auckland University and Chartered Accountant (NZ and UK). • Graduate of the Future Auckland Leaders programme (a civic leadership programme, 2015). • Keen outdoors enthusiast including playing football, golf and running.
